3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis)
Breast tomosynthesis is a breakthrough in screening mammography that provides a clearer, more accurate view compared to digital mammography alone. Research on breast tomosynthesis in large populations consistently show improved breast cancer detection rates, especially earlier invasive cancers, and a decrease in call backs by 40%, which may lessen anxiety for patients.
Tomosynthesis produces a three-dimensional multi-slice view of the breast tissue that helps our fellowship-trained breast radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the issue of overlapping tissue. Several large clinical studies have shown that a 3D mammogram is more accurate, detecting serious cancers 40% earlier than 2D alone. 3D mammography is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram regardless of age, breast type,screening/ diagnostic mammogram.
3D Whole Breast Ultrasound
Whole breast ultrasound is an imaging technique which uses sound waves to create 3D images of the breasts. When combined with other breast imaging tools such as mammography, whole breast ultrasound helps SimonMed radiologists provide more accurate and reliable diagnoses. In particular, whole breast ultrasound is an ideal imaging choice for women with dense breast tissue.
SimonMed uses the new Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) technology to help physicians look at dense breast tissue. Working in tandem with a mammogram, 3D ABUS scans offer a better chance to diagnose breast cancer early at a more treatable stage. We are pleased to now be able to offer the FDA-approved breast screening technology specifically developed to increase breast cancer detection for women with dense breast tissue with no previous clinical breast intervention.
- 93% of cancers detected with ABUS screening and occult with mammography were
- Pathologically confirmed as invasive
- The majority of the lesions detected with ABUS are small (87% ≤19mm in size), node
Negative (74%) breast cancers
Mammographic sensitivity for detecting breast cancer is in the 90-95% range in the low density (fatty) category of breast tissue. Conversely, in women at the other end of the spectrum with extremely dense breast tissue, the sensitivity of mammography is in the 40-50% range. Improved mammography technology coupled with more sensitive modalities, such as ultrasound, should be considered for women with dense breasts.
- Women with dense breast tissue are at 4-6
- Times higher risk of developing breast cancer
- In dense breast tissue, mammography screening
Alone misses more than 1/3 of all cancers
