3D Mammography—detail page

When it comes to detecting breast cancer, the earlier, the better. This is why SimonMed is excited to offer three-dimensional (3D) mammography, one of the most advanced and powerful breast screening technologies available. With 3D mammography, we’re able to give our patients earlier diagnoses with greater accuracy than ever before. At the same time, SimonMed patients enjoy our friendly, respectful care and an imaging process that’s quick, easy, and painless.
Read below to learn more about this exciting new technology and the difference it’s making for women’s breast care.

What is 3D mammography?

3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, is a relatively new imaging modality, having been approved by the FDA in early 2011. Like traditional two-dimensional (2D) mammography, 3D mammography uses x-rays to take images of the breast. 3D mammography, however, captures more images of the breast, from multiple angles, than 2D scans—over 120 images, compared to four images with 2D imaging. Advanced computer software turns these images into thin layers, giving SimonMed radiologists a detailed, three-dimensional look at the entire breast.
SimonMed uses the very latest 3D digital breast tomosynthesis technologies. Not only do these systems provide high-quality images, their low-radiation scan is the same as that of a standard 2D mammogram of the same view, which keeps exposure to a minimum.

What are the advantages of 3D mammography?

3D mammography, when combined with traditional 2D mammography, is helping SimonMed meet our commitment to high-quality imaging and an outstanding patient experience. Let’s look at some of the advantages of 3D mammography:
Accurate, reliable images. According to a 2014 study by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 3D mammography increased cancer detection rates by 29% over conventional 2D imaging alone. Using 3D mammography in combination with traditional 2D mammography and other screening techniques, our radiologists can detect tumors or other abnormalities sooner, which may lead to better outcomes.
Effective for women with dense breasts. While 3D mammography is appropriate for general screening, it may be especially helpful for the patients most difficult to scan—women with dense breast tissue. The higher accuracy of 3D imaging may lead to fewer false-negative and false-positive results.
Fewer callbacks. Multiple recent studies have found that there was a 20-40% decline in the number of women who had to return for additional testing after receiving a 3D mammogram.
Patient safety. As mentioned above, SimonMed’s 3D mammography systems use the same low radiation dosage as regular 2D mammography.
Patient comfort. 3D mammography is not only more accurate than 2D mammography, but many patients also that report that receiving 3D mammography is easier and more comfortable than 2D.

What happens during the 3D mammography procedure?

At SimonMed, the 3D mammography procedure is designed with your safety and comfort in mind.
Your imaging session will take place in a private examination room. To begin your examination, your SimonMed technician will ask that you remove all clothing from the waist up, including jewelry. Then your technician will place your breasts between two compression plates to hold them in place.
When you’re positioned properly, the technician will move the digital 3D breast tomosynthesis machine’s robotic arm around your compressed breasts. Thanks to the machine’s advanced technology, only nine exposures, lasting just 2-3 seconds each, are needed for a complete scan.
Your examination will be over in about 10 minutes and you can resume your normal activities without restriction.
