Traditional x-rays of the back only show
spine imaging of bone, and may not be sensitive enough to identify
subtle fractures.
Additionally, x-rays can’t show the
soft-tissue structures surrounding the bones of the spine,
such as the discs between the vertebrae, which can be a
common source of pain.
Spine CT can be used to produce more detailed bone
images than plain x-rays, and can be very helpful in looking
for subtle fractures.
Spine MRI is a common spine scan exam used to look at the
bones and soft tissues of the spine. It is extremely helpful
in diagnosing problems such as slipped or herniated discs.
With the use of advanced spine MRI techniques
like those available at SimonMed, three-dimensional spine imaging
can be completed in minutes. Speed is especially important,
because patients with back pain often have difficulty lying
down for long periods of time.
Special Preparation
No special preparation is required for our spine CT, except in special
cases of infection or cancer staging. In these cases, avoid
solid food four hours prior to the exam. Medications and
limited liquids are allowed.
