Traditionally, much of women’s imaging has
been performed with ultrasound due to the lack of radiation
involved. CT scans are often reserved for special cases like
cancer staging.
In the past, MRI was considered too slow to
be a reasonable alternative. With the imaging equipment
available at SimonMed, we can now perform highly accurate
MRI exams in minutes and often demonstrate findings
previously not seen.
MRI is not limited like ultrasound in having
a good acoustic window. MRI can look at blood flow. And MRI
can often be used to characterize tissue, which, for
example, gives us the ability to tell the difference between
endometriosis and a simple cyst.
When performed quickly and accurately, MRI
has the potential to truly revolutionize women’s imaging.
