We offer a choice of MRI and CT scans for
the brain, depending on what conditions we’re looking for.
Each technique has certain advantages.
A CT scan produces a brain image that can be
rotated and viewed in three dimensions, enabling us to look
for problems in the blood vessels like narrowing or
aneurysms. We also use CT to study the fine bones, like
those that control hearing in the inner and middle ear.
An MRI scan can give us good anatomical
pictures of the brain and blood vessels as well, plus other
valuable information. Our MRI equipment lets us study blood
flow within capillaries, water flow within cells, and the
chemical makeup of tissue.
A CT brain scan can take seconds to
complete, while a brain MRI takes about 20 minutes. Some
exams require IV contrast.
Special Preparation
For IV contrast studies, avoid solid food four hours
prior to the exam. Medications and limited liquids are
allowed.
