Heart MRI and heart CT have the potential to
significantly impact the treatment of patients with heart
disease.
The very newest heart CT scanners, with additional
modifications for heart scan exams like we have at SimonMed,
can provide remarkably detailed images of the coronary
arteries.
Using out heart imaging, we are even able to see non-calcified plaque
in the artery walls before they become narrowed. This is
important, because this type of plaque - also called
"unstable plaque" - can break apart and close the
vessel acutely, causing a heart attack.
Heart MRI offers the ability to look at blood flow
to the heart, analyze the function of the heart muscle and
the valves, and check for scars in the muscle. This can be
accomplished in a total time of less than 15 minutes,
revolutionizing the heart imaging of heart disease. For
these studies, IV contrast is normally required.
At SimonMed, we use the Siemens Sonata, a
heart MRI found at leading heart centers worldwide. We
also use a dedicated cardiac workstation and our studies are
interpreted by leading heart MRI experts across the
country.
Special Preparation
For IV contrast studies, avoid solid food four hours
prior to the exam. Medications and limited liquids are
allowed.
